MORE THAN $65,000 RAISED AT FIFTH ANNUAL CHANGING LIVES THROUGH LITERACY GOLF TOURNAMENT
DALLAS (March 11, 2004) – The fifth annual Changing Lives Through Literacy Golf Tournament was a huge success, raising more than $65,000 for Vickery Meadow Learning Center. The event, held on October 27, 2003 at the Dallas Athletic Club, was the largest yet, with 175 golfers hitting the links. Medical City Dallas, again, led the way as presenting sponsor. The beautiful weather helped, but it was the great cause, the competition and the prizes that made for an enjoyable day.
For the second year in a row, the Bracewell & Patterson team, captained by Sandy Brown, won the team event on the Gold Course, while David Lawrence’s team won on the Blue Course. Sandy’s team included Windol Cook, Mark Murdock and Clint Roxburgh. David’s team was comprised of Tom Hern, Glenn Laursen and Mike Oxley.
This year’s inaugural $100,000 Shootout, sponsored by Red Hot & Blue, was a hit, even though no one collected on the skill shot. David Lawrence came closest to holing out from 150 yards under the lights, landing less than 10 feet from the pin. The eight participants, by dint of membership on the winning team or by a raffle draw, all enjoyed the challenge.
The post-tournament dinner on the lawn was followed by a lively auction that included sports memorabilia, travel opportunities and participation opportunities. Next year’s event, for which planning is already underway, will, again, be held at DAC on Monday, October 18, 2004.
